ExitEvent is fortunate to have an amazing team of writers, contributors and interns and because of that, the average reader might not realize we have a lean full-time editorial staff of one—me.

And so any time ExitEvent is invited to collaborate to produce great content, I'm all in. The videos you'll see below are examples of an especially exciting collaboration with our neighbor in Durham, the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham or AIRD. I especially loved this project because it let us tell two compelling startup stories while training up the next generation of student multimedia journalists and creatives.

Our relationship with AIRD Professor Kelly Smith-Campbell began after I met with a trio of staff members at the college to discuss internship opportunities, class speaking engagements and job shadows. Kelly took it a step forward by inviting former ExitEvent videographer Ryan Timms and I to speak to her beginning digital film students. And that relationship escalated this past spring when we gave a pair of real ExitEvent assignments to her intermediate video production class and challenged the students to film and produce the videos. We promised to give feedback on their work and to publish the best two videos on our site. (They also got grades from Kelly.)

Bull Durham Beer Company and Big Spoon Roasters were great sports in letting us come into their businesses as a large group to film B-roll and interviews. While Ryan and I handled the interviews with company leaders, the students did everything else—from sound, lighting and background music to editing and production. We're super proud of their work and excited to show it off here on ExitEvent.
